The Central Drugs Standards Control Organization (CDSCO) recently listed paracetamol as “Not of Standard Quality (NSQ)” among 53 other drugs. Every household has paracetamol strips in their medicine box to fight cough, cold and fever. Although it has been a widely used over-the-counter drug worldwide for decades, recent quality control failures have raised concerns about its safety and efficacy.
According to the August NSQ alert issued by India’s drug regulatory authority CDSCO, more than 50 drugs have been declared substandard. These warnings are the results of a random sample conducted by state drug authorities each month. Along with Paracetamol, medicines like vitamin C, D3 tablets, Shellcol, vitamin B complex, vitamin C soft gels, antacid Pan-D, glimepiride, high blood pressure drug Telmisartan were also found to have failed the quality tests.
So what can we take if not paracetamol? What are consultant intensive, critical care specialist doctors saying..? That means..? Ibuprofen, Diclofenac, Meprosin, Meftol, Nimesulide are suggested as alternatives.
Ibuprofen: Similar to paracetamol, ibuprofen works for pain. It can also be used if there are symptoms of fever. This is a type of medicine called a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID), which reduces inflammation.
Nimesulide: The National Institute of Health, in its report, states that Nimesulide is as effective as paracetamol in reducing fever, general discomfort and local pain.
Diclofenac: According to research by the National Institute of Health, diclofenac has been found to be more effective than paracetamol in reducing the intensity and frequency of pain.
Fluids: Drinking plenty of fluids like water, herbal teas, soups will keep the body hydrated and reduce sore throat. Ginger or peppermint tea can reduce discomfort and promote sweating, which helps cool the body.
Steam: Take boiling water in a pan and add oil of your choice. Steam for at least 10 minutes while inhaling the steam. It helps in reducing cough. Can be used to clear blocked nose.
Wet cloth: If you have a fever, apply a cool, wet cloth to the forehead, wrists, or neck. This home remedy provides relief. Helps in lowering body temperature. Taking a warm bath can slowly bring down the fever.
Adequate rest: Make sure to get enough rest, which helps the body fight infections, which are often the root cause of fever.
Turmeric milk: Drinking turmeric milk known in Indian households can also relieve colds and sore throats. Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric can help reduce pain and reduce fever.
