Dailymirror.news, Hyderabad, October 27, 2024: In a powerful show of solidarity for breast cancer awareness, Apollo Cancer Centres (ACCs) in Hyderabad hosted the #PinkDefenderWalkathon today at the Kasu Brahmananda Reddy National (KBR) Park. The event brought together over 100 male staff members, including oncologists, nurses, and medical professionals, to emphasize the vital role men can play in supporting the fight against breast cancer. This initiative aims to advocate for early detection and encourage discussions around breast health, forming part of ACCs’ broader #TalkPink campaign to raise awareness and dismantle the stigma surrounding breast cancer.
Recognizing that women often prioritize the health of those around them, the #PinkDefenderWalkathon encouraged men to step forward as advocates for their mothers, wives, sisters, and friends, ensuring they receive necessary screenings for breast cancer.
The walkathon was inaugurated by Chief Guest Mr. C.V. Anand, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad, who was joined by senior clinicians, including Dr. Vijay Anand Reddy, Director of Apollo Cancer Centre, Hyderabad, and Dr. TPS Bhandari, Senior Consultant – Surgical Oncology, Apollo Cancer Centre, Hyderabad.
Participants, clad in pink T-shirts, filled KBR Park with enthusiasm, carrying messages highlighting how men can contribute to promoting awareness about women’s breast health. The striking visual of the sea of pink against the lush greenery symbolized their commitment to the cause. Banners and placards with empowering messages adorned the park, and the camaraderie among participants was palpable as they walked in unison.
Mr. C.V. Anand praised Apollo Cancer Centres for fostering community engagement and promoting open discussions about breast health. “Breast cancer affects not only women but their entire families. Men can play a crucial role in increasing awareness about breast health, encouraging women to perform self-examinations and seek early detection for better treatment outcomes. Initiatives like #TalkPink and the #PinkDefenderWalkathon help us break the silence and rally around our loved ones,” he stated, emphasizing the shared responsibility in healthcare.
Dr. Vijay Anand Reddy, Director of Apollo Cancer Centre, highlighted the significance of raising awareness and promoting early screening as essential steps to reducing mortality rates among women. “We are proud to organize events like the #PinkDefenderWalkathon, where our male staff, including oncologists and nurses, come together to advocate for women. Apollo’s #TalkPink initiative ensures this crucial message reaches every household,” he noted.
Dr. TPS Bhandari, Senior Consultant – Surgical Oncology, underscored the campaign’s goal of addressing the stigma surrounding breast cancer. “Self-examinations and regular screenings, such as mammograms, are vital for early detection, which can greatly improve treatment outcomes. One of the significant challenges we face is the fear and silence surrounding breast health issues. Through the #TalkPink campaign and #PinkDefender Walkathon, we aim to empower women to openly discuss breast health and become more vigilant in their care.”
The campaign seeks to ignite meaningful discussions within families, workplaces, and communities, challenging the silence and stigma around breast cancer. By fostering collaboration between men and women, it aims to create a future where breast cancer no longer claims lives.
