Dailymirror.news Hyderabad, March 6, 2026: Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, a powerhouse performer known for her grit on screen, has officially stepped into the director’s chair with her debut feature, S Saraswathi. Produced by Varalaxmi and her sister Pooja, the film arrived in theaters this Friday, blending a sensitive social message with the tension of a psychological courtroom thriller.

The Narrative: A Descent into Mystery

The film centers on Lakshmi (Varalaxmi), a diligent nurse and orphan whose life is anchored by her daughter, Saraswathi. The story takes a harrowing turn on Independence Day when Saraswathi vanishes after being dropped off at school. The nightmare intensifies as the school administration denies that any student by that name ever existed.

As the police investigation led by a cynical officer (Murali Sharma) hits a dead end with no witnesses and an empty grave, the case takes a macabre turn. Frustrated by a dismissive legal system, Lakshmi seeks the help of a legendary advocate, Ramanujam (Prakash Raj).

However, the plot pivots sharply when Lakshmi takes the law into her own hands, murdering three powerful officials she claims were complicit in her daughter’s fate. This shift transforms the movie from a “missing person” hunt into a high-stakes psychological puzzle: Is Saraswathi a victim of a massive cover-up, or a figment of a fractured mind?

Direction and Screenplay..

For a directorial debut, Varalaxmi shows significant ambition by choosing to tackle the grim subject of child abuse within a complex “crime vs. psychology” framework. She successfully creates a somber, heavy atmosphere and establishes a deep emotional connection in the first act.

However, the film encounters a few hurdles..

Predictability: The screenplay drops hints a bit too early, allowing seasoned thriller fans to anticipate the major twists before they arrive.

Pacing: The second half feels slightly overstretched due to repetitive investigative scenes and lengthy courtroom arguments that lack the sharp, “edge-of-your-seat” dialogue one might expect from a legal drama.

Emotional Depth: While the vigilante motives are well-contextualized, the flashback sequences could have carried more weight if the emotional punch had been more visceral.

Powerhouse Performances..

Prakash Raj acts as the film’s structural anchor. His portrayal of Advocate Ramanujam is masterful, lending a sense of intellectual grit and gravity to the courtroom sequences. He proves once again why he remains one of the most reliable actors in the industry.

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar carries the emotional burden of the film with ease. Balancing the duality of a grieving mother and a calculated vigilante, she delivers a grounded and sincere performance. The supporting cast including Nassar, Rao Ramesh, and Radikaa Sarathkumar—provides a solid foundation, while Jiiva’s extended cameo adds a refreshing spark to the narrative.

Technical Brilliance..

S. Thaman delivers a haunting background score that effectively amplifies the film’s psychological dread. The production values are top-tier, and the cinematography cleverly uses visual contrast to distinguish between Lakshmi’s warm, simple home life and the cold, clinical nature of the legal system.

S Saraswathi is a brave and commendable entry into the world of filmmaking for Varalaxmi Sarathkumar. It isn’t just a thriller; it is a social commentary on the vulnerability of children and the systemic cracks in our justice system. Despite minor pacing issues and a somewhat predictable plot, the film is elevated by its stellar performances and sincere heart.
