Dailymirror.news, Hyderabad, October 18, 2025:The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has cracked down on the use of the term ‘ORS’ (Oral Rehydration Solution), directing all food businesses to stop using it on labels, in advertisements, and in the brand names of fruit-based, non-carbonated, and ready-to-drink beverages.

Why the Restriction?

Issued via communications on October 14 and 15, the FSSAI clarified that including “ORS” in a trademark—even with added words—violates the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006.

The primary goal is to prevent consumer confusion. Genuine ORS is a drug specifically formulated for treating diarrhoeal dehydration. The FSSAI stressed that general electrolyte drinks, while safe for non-diarrhoeal dehydration, are fundamentally different from medical-grade ORS.

Clarification: Products Are Not Banned

Despite the directive to change labels, misinformation has spread among retailers claiming that products like ORSL are immediately ‘banned.’ The FSSAI has confirmed this is false.

According to the FSSAI Order dated 15.10.2025, any required labeling amendments will be enforced through ‘Improvement Notices’ issued by Designated Officers, allowing a structured process for compliance under the FSS Act, 2006.

Court Grants Relief to ORSL

The situation was further complicated on October 17 when the Delhi High Court granted a stay on the enforcement of the FSSAI’s orders against Kenvue, the company that markets the well-known ORSL brand.

As a result of this court stay and the existing regulatory provisions, retailers are permitted to continue distributing and selling ORSL and similar products until further notice.

The FSSAI’s decision reflects its ongoing commitment to maintaining the integrity of food labeling and ensuring consumers clearly understand the nature of the products they purchase.
